A bit of history

Morphology and history of the Asiago Plateau Seven Municipalities

The Altopiano dei Sette Comuni (Sieben Comoine), better known by the name of Asiago Plateau, is formed in its morphological nature by two steps: one located at an altitude of about 1000 m. s.l.m., which welcomes the town of Asiago in a beautiful sunny basin protected from the cold winds of the north; the other, huge, further north, at a height that varies between 1500 and 2000 m. s.l.m.

The slopes of the Centro Fondo Campomulo develop on the north step reaching 2,106 m. of Monte Ortigara. The ski area is of truly gigantic proportions.

Plateau: land of Cimbri

Killed both roots of the Asiago plateau

The first inhabitants of the Plateau were probably the Cimbri, barbarians.

It was provevienti peoples from northern Germany, but also from Holland and Scandinavian countries even more (Denmark, Sweden and Norway), who had invaded, around the year 1000, the northern part of Italy.

Subsequently, won and pressed by the Romans, fleeing, they had found up here, on our plateau, an area they are familiar and congenial: great forests with large plateaus and clearings. That was how we settled, becoming lumberjacks and shepherds.

Their language, which denotes the origin, was the old German (Hoch Deutsch), very similar to the spoken language used in Denmark.

It is said that ...

Regarding origins killed both of our people, we want to tell you a fact quite curious, namely the visit he made in this territory, in 1709, Denmark's King Frederick IV, which was welcomed by the population of the plateau with the cry of greeting " Hoch unser könig"(long live our King).

Tell the stories that the King, during the rebound phase toward his Kingdom after a long visit to Italy where he touched various towns, including Vicenza, became aware that there was a small State in territory of Vicenza which boasted of belonging the ancient lineage of the Cimbri, the same people who inhabited the Denmark.

Incredulous, both about their origin than on their language, the King wanted to personally know the truth by visiting the district. We read in ancient writings: "such a thing brought to that King wonder sum and pleasure together great, protesting that in his court do not speak so forbitamente".

This small country of Cimbrian language in Italian territory ruled by independent Republic for a long time; so did his people remained "pure" until the fall of the Venetian Republic, its natural guardian.

Plateau and the great war

The 15-18 war on the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni

It must be remembered, also, another important event which determined the fate of this small strip of land in Northern type, namely the total destruction that suffered its countries during the great war (1915-18).

In particular the North Terrace was the scene of fierce battles, whose signs are still visible.

Not far from chalet at Campomulo, easily accessible with a walk in the summer or with a snowshoe hike in winter, there's the great war Military Observatory, a place with a great view over the plateau, including the peaks that were the protagonists of the most famous battles that were fought during the first world war, including the Ortigara, Cima Campigoletti, mount Church, Caldiera, etc.
